Take Action For Lucy

There are several actions that you can take to help Lucy:

Write to the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and the Minister of Environment and Parks

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry is responsible for enforcing the Alberta Zoo Standards while the Minister of Environment and Parks is responsible for issuing zoo permits (which require that Alberta Zoo Standards be met).  The Standards mandate that animals be housed in appropriate social groups.  The Valley Zoo is violating the province's Zoo standards by keeping Lucy alone. Send a letter or email to the Ministers and Premier urging them to take action to ensure compliance with Alberta's Zoo Standards.

Send an E-mail to the Mayor and Members of Council

The Valley Zoo is municipally-owned and operated, so the City of Edmonton has the authority to determine how the zoo operates and what decisions are made.

Please write to the City of Edmonton Mayor and Members of Council and let them know that you want Lucy moved to more appropriate accommodation, where there is more space, a better environment, other elephants to socialize with and a warm climate, as soon as possible. Tell them that Lucy should not be alone in a small, bland enclosure in a cold climate, and that keeping Lucy is in contravention of Alberta's zoo regulations.

E-mail your local Newspapers

Tell them about Lucy's story and why you think she should be moved. Tell them that Lucy should not be kept alone; that Edmonton is too cold for elephants; that the zoo's elephant exhibit is too small; and that keeping Lucy is in contravention of Alberta's zoo regulations.
